When plan members accumulate excess medication, plan sponsors accumulate unnecessary costs. Even a small amount of excess specialty drug supply can be expensive, contributing substantially to your overall drug spend.

Supply Management Optimization is a CVS Specialty pharmacy service that uses advanced analytics and personalized digital engagement to help encourage behavior changes to avoid excess drug accumulation of select specialty medications.

Here’s how it works: When a member requests a refill of their medication, such as through the CVS Specialty mobile app, a preferred fill date will be suggested. The date is based on how much we know the member should already have in their supply, leveraging a one-year lookback of dispensing data.

If they choose the preferred date, they will get just the right amount of medication they need. If they want to fill their prescription sooner, they will need to indicate a specific reason, such as their medication being lost, stolen, or damaged; a vacation; or a change in prescription.
