Supporting local access to high-quality care through community pharmacies

Briefing

Pharmacies are the most accessible and frequently visited health care delivery destinations in the country. They are critical resources in communities across America where millions get their medications and other important services, like vaccinations. They are also some of the most trusted places to receive care, as pharmacists are ranked as the third most trusted medical professionals.1

CVS Caremark is dedicated to providing the best pharmacy care, ensuring easy and equitable access to appropriate medications, and fostering health and well-being for all Americans no matter where they live. We continuously monitor and address potential access gaps across our national network of more than 65,000 pharmacies, almost 43% of which are independent pharmacies,2  and continue to make investments to increase access where it’s most needed by:

  • Supporting a healthy pharmacy ecosystem that includes local, independently-owned pharmacies – including in rural areas
  • Innovating pharmacy reimbursement – through CostVantage for CVS Pharmacy and CVS Caremark TrueCost for payors – by deepening drug pricing transparency and supporting sustainable pharmacy services
  • Creating convenience with home delivery that brings medications directly to the patient’s doorstep
  • Expanding medication dispensing by physicians, nurse practitioners, hospitals, and the primary care network of Oak Street Health, a CVS Health subsidiary

43% of pharmacies in our national PBM network are independent2

98% of Caremark plan members have convenient access to local pharmacies, exceeding CMS standards2

At CVS Caremark, it’s all about access and affordability. We’re committed to eliminating barriers to obtaining essential medications and health care services, especially in rural and under-served communities.
